The Hips Don’t Lie - Or do they?

  • Mula Yoga 2 Smithy Walk Ormskirk, England, L40 5UU United Kingdom (map)

A 3½-hour workshop for yoga teachers and curious movers.

You've probably heard the phrases...

"Open your hips."

"Square your hips."

"Stress is stored in the hips."

"Your hips are tight."

But how much of what we've been taught about the hips is actually true?

Join me for an engaging, practical workshop where we’ll explore the anatomy of the hip, challenge some of yoga's most common myths, and discover why the hips can never be understood in isolation.

Using a skeleton, anatomical models, movement experiments and plenty of yoga practice, we'll investigate what the hips really do—and why the feet, knees, pelvis and spine all play an essential role in how they move.

This isn't about learning complicated anatomy.

It's about making anatomy make sense.

 Together we'll explore:

•  Is there really such a thing as a hip opener?

•  What do we actually mean when we cue "square your hips"?

•  Tight hips... or weak hips? How can we tell the difference?

•  Why do some postures feel completely different from one body to another?

•  How do the feet, ankles, knees and spine influence the hips?

•  Why doesn't every body suit the same alignment?

•  Where did ideas like "stress is stored in the hips" come from, and what do we understand about them today?

•  Practical ways to apply this knowledge in yoga practice and teaching.

Throughout the afternoon we'll relate everything back to familiar postures such as Warrior I, Warrior II, Triangle, Tree, Pigeon and more, helping you understand why we move the way we do—not just how.

Whether you're a yoga teacher looking to deepen your understanding or a student who's fascinated by movement, you'll leave with greater confidence, clearer understanding, and a completely fresh perspective on one of the most misunderstood areas of the body.

Suitable for:

•  Yoga teachers (CPD certificate provided, registered with YTT)

•  Yoga students

•  Anyone interested in movement, anatomy and making yoga make sense
